Genesis GV80 Competitive Comparison

2021 Genesis GV80 vs. Audi Q7, Lexus RX 350, and BMW X5: Compare midsize luxury crossovers near Atlanta

In 2017, Genesis made an impressive first foray into the luxury market with the critically acclaimed G90 full-size sedan. Spurred on by the positive response, the industry's newest premium brand entered the compact and midsize luxury segments with the G70 and G80, providing stiff competition for the old legacy automakers and challenging conventional notions of luxury. And when the G70 earned the coveted North American Car of the Year award, the shake-up was complete.

Now, with three successful luxury vehicles under its belt, the Genesis stable, the company is ready to plant its flag in among the establishment of luxury utility vehicles with the all-new 2021 Genesis GV80. It may be the new kid on the block, but the GV80 midsize crossover's well-rounded fusion of luxury, performance, reliability, and value is already hard to beat. Here's a look at how it fares against three prominent competitors: the Audi Q7, Lexus RX 350, BMW X5

2021 Genesis GV80 vs. Audi Q7

  • Fayette drivers seeking a livelier driver experience will prefer the GV80's standard turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. The Audi Q7's turbocharged 2.0-liter falls behind, with just 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.

  • Versatile utility is one of the primary reasons drivers choose a crossover SUV. While both models provide around 35 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row, the GV80's 84 cubic-foot maximum cargo capacity dwarfs the Q7, which provides just 69.6 cubic feet.

  • The GV80 comes standard with a stunning 14.5-inch high-resolution with wireless connectivity, integrated navigation and HD Traffic, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12-speaker audio system. The Audi Q7 comes with a 10.1-inch display, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 10-speaker audio system.

  • Discerning and safety-conscious Stockbridge families will appreciate the GV80's extensive list of standard driver-assistance technologies. All GV80 models equip systems for collision warning and avoidance, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and front and rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning and mitigation, lane-change assist, and front and rear parking sensors. The Q7 is also well-equipped, but adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist are only optional, and front cross-traffic warning isn't offered.

2021 Genesis GV80 vs. Lexus RX 350

  • The Lexus RX 350's 3.5-liter V-6 approaches the GV80's horsepower rating (295 vs. 300) but can't match it for torque (311 vs. 268 pound-feet). The GV80 also offers an available twin-turbo V-6 (375 hp, 391 lb-ft), but the RX 350 doesn't have an optional engine.

  • Both models offer an extensive list of advanced safety features as standard equipment. Front and rear parking sensors are only optional on the RX 350, but otherwise, the two are evenly matched.

  • The Genesis GV80 offers just slightly more cargo space behind the second row (33.9 vs. 32.6). However, when comparing max capacities, it's not even close, as the GV80's 84 cubic feet swallow the 56.3 of the RX 350.

  • The Lexus RX offers two infotainment screen sizes, a standard 8-inch and an available 12.3. Both are smaller than the GV80's standard 14.5-inch high-res display. And while the RX 350 also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation and a 12-speaker audio system are optional, not standard.

2021 Genesis GV80 vs. BMW X5

  • The GV80 and BMW X5 have identical storage volumes behind the second row, but the GV80's maximum capacity bests the X5 by 12 cubic feet.

  • AWD base models of the GV80 and X5 offer heated, power-adjustable front seats with simulated leather upholstery. However, the GV80 also includes ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel, which are optional on the X5.

  • Both models offer phone-as-a-key capability that allows for unlocking and starting the vehicle without a physical key. But the GV80 also offers the exclusive Remote Smart Parking Assist, which enables you to enter a tight parking space using your Smart Key from outside the vehicle.

  • The GV80's list of standard driver-assistance technologies is substantially longer. Base models of both vehicles include collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. But the GV80 comes standard with many features that the X5 doesn't, including adaptive cruise control, front cross-traffic warning, lane-departure mitigation, lane-change assist, and front and rear parking sensors.
